Keonjhar: The female elephant and it’s calf, whose carcasses were found inside the Kalapat reserve forest under Telkoi forest range in Keonjhar district yesterday, had died of arrow attack.
A broken arrow was recovered from the body of the female elephant during autopsy. The arrow had passed through the stomach of the elephant and hit the uterus.
As a result, the baby elephant died in the womb. The mother elephant gave birth to a prematurely dead calf, and died along with it.
It is pertinent to mention that some locals after spotting the carcasses in the forest near Kuliapal on Monday immediately informed the Forest department.
On being informed, DFO HD Dhanraj, and other officials visited the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem. A probe was initiated into the matter.
