Malkangiri: Babushan starrer ‘DAMaN’ is receiving a huge response across the State especially in Malkangiri for portraying the true struggle faced by the people and the doctors who were committed to deliver health care in the current ‘Swabhiman Anchal’ which was once a remote and inaccessible area of the district.
Around 151 villages in Chitrakonda block of the district were cut-off from the outer world with no access to government facilities or health services before the construction of the Gurupriya Bridge. It was living under the terror of Maoists. At this time, people were dying of several diseases due to lack of treatment. One of those diseases is malaria.
The movie ‘DAMaN’ chronicles the efforts of a doctor posted in a remote hamlet of Malkangiri district, in delivering healthcare and raising awareness to reject superstitions.. It gets its inspiration from the story of a doctor who played a key role in treating Malaria patients and eradicating the disease in an interior village of the district.
For a long time, Malkangiri was a malaria hotspot. In 2017, the State Government launched a special programme, Durgama Anchalare Malaria Nirakarana (DAMaN) – meaning malaria control in inaccissible areas- in Malkangiri and few other districts.
To prevent malaria in different parts of the district, doctors came by boat and provided health care and awareness to the people. Due to those efforts, the DAMaN Abhiyan achieved a lot of success and the film is based on it. Now this film is running houseful in theatres and multiplexes in all major towns and cities.
