Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) is to field Satya Bhusan Sahu as its candidate for the upcoming bye-election to the Padampur Assembly Constituency in Bargarh district, informed party MLAs Suresh Kumar Routray and Tara Prasad Bahinipati on Saturday.
Sahu, a three-time MLA and former government chief whip had won from the seat in 2004. He had finished third in the 2019 Assembly election by garnering 32,787 votes. In the 2009 election, Sahu polled 49,847 votes and finished second behind the BJD candidate Bijay Ranjan Singh Bariha.
It is pertinent to mention that the polling will be held on December 5. The results are scheduled to be declared on December 8. The last date of filing nomination papers is November 17 and scrutiny of papers will be held on November 18. The last date of withdrawing candidature is November 21.
The bypoll was necessitated after the demise of BJD MLA Bijay Ranjan Singh Bariha at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on October 2.
